Glasgow Sport kick started the recruitment for the Glasgow Ambassador Programme (GAP) at the beginning of this exciting year for sport. With Hampden Park being one of the host venues for the Olympic Football in July and August this year, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for volunteers to be involved in the Olympic Games in Glasgow.
Who got involved?
Over 190 volunteers applied to become ambassadors for the programme and around 140 were interviewed over the course of the day on 22nd February at the City Halls. Potential Ambassadors were interviewed by a combination of Glasgow Sport, Sports Development Staff and 9 trained volunteers.
One of the trained volunteer interviewers, Katie Clucas was asked about her experience. She said “This has been an amazing opportunity for me to be involved in this programme. Being able to meet people from Glasgow who are passionate about the city and their volunteering is so inspiring, it reminds me why I volunteer myself. I have gained so much confidence from getting involved in this programme,. Completing the training and then interviewing people who are so inspiring is such a rewarding thing to do.”
What will an Ambassador do?
Glasgow Ambassadors will play an important role on game days during the Olympic Football events on the 25th, 26th, 28th July and the 1st and 3rd of August at Hampden Park Glasgow. The Ambassadors’ roles will be to welcome thousands of people from across the world who will be visiting Glasgow for the football, provide information about further attractions across the city and engage with spectators to ensure that they help to make the spectators experience in Glasgow a great one!
A spokes person for the Sports Development Team at Glasgow Sport said: “This a fantastic opportunity for those wanting to be involved in the Olympics in Glasgow. People with a passion for Glasgow can welcome the world to the city offering support and assistance to visitors across the city. We have had a great response for the programme and the people applying for this role are inspiring in so many ways, from their volunteering experience to their passion and knowledge about Glasgow and the Olympic Games.”
