Glasgow Coach part funded to attend Ganon Baker Basketball Clinic in Florida
Many of the candidates on the Glasgow Sport Coach Development Programme, Excel in Coaching, are supported with funding to undertake a ‘coaching experience’, where they are assisted to shadow a coach that shows outstanding good practice within their particular sport.
Ross Hutton, became the first of the new intake of coaches to access this funding in order to travel to the Ganon Baker Basketball Camp in Orlando, Florida. Ross was part funded to attend the camp, which took place over three days and was very well attended with 39 coaches from all over the US, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Germany. The attendees also included, Kevin Eastman, assistant coach of the NBA team, the Boston Celtics.
Ganon is regarded one of the top basketball skills trainers in America, working with many of the top NBA stars. Ross attended a number of clinics over a three day period which touched on many topics based around Ganon’s coaching philosophy of developing ‘Living trophies’ which means instead of just focussing on winning championships or the win/loss record, coaches should be investing their knowledge and time on helping those we teach become better individuals.
The three day programme covered a wealth of practical and workshop based sessions touching on basketball IQ, purposeful practice, mindsets, leadership, practical skill practices and motor skills. After the conclusion of the camp Ross said ‘I would recommend to anyone who wants to improve their basketball coaching skills to attend this clinic as not only do you learn more about how to teach the game to players, it’s a chance to improve your understanding of how to lead players to an elite level of performance both mentally and physically.’
As part of the funding agreement, Ross produced a very detailed account of his coaching experience and shall deliver a number of workshops and seminars on what he learned at the camp. These shall be delivered to local basketball coaches within the Glasgow area. Ross has already delivered a presentation to the other Excel in Coaching candidates to outline his experience and also demonstrate what is possible through this funding stream.
