SMASHING SECOND QUARTER SHOCKS NORTHERN IRELAND
The Scottish team are "ecstatic" according to captain Lynsey Gallagher, speaking immediately after beating Northern Ireland 42-50.
In an enthralling contest they upset Northern Ireland with a fantastic come back in the second quarter.
A Northern-Irish-dominated first quarter of 15-7 paved the way for Scottish coach Mary Tough to live up to her name at the quarter time break.
"I said to them that we're not losing this game because of stupid errors. We were making mistakes, we didn't look confident in the first quarter and I felt we had the ability to beat them." she said.
Lynsey Gallagher lead her team by example in the second quarter and they demolished the deficit.
"To be able come back and win by eight, 16 goals essentially, is absolutely amazing, the team are buzzing." she said, "We were flying from that second quarter."
Scotland kept the momentum flowing into the second half and hung on to the quarter wins.
With the surprise positioning of Emily Gray at C instead of WD the Scots were able to keep one step ahead of the Northern Irish who only lost by one goal to Scotland at the European U21 Championship in May.
Northern Ireland's heads dropped and they couldn't get back at the Scots. "We definitely thought we were capable of better than 13th-16th." their disappointed captain Niamh Cooper said.
The home crowd in the Emirates Arena also played their part in the game and Gallagher was full of praise.
"They've been there from the start till now. They are always getting behind you and are pretty much like the eighth man." she explained, "It's amazing to have that support whether you are down or up."
Coach Mary Tough was also all smiles.
"Our target was 12th place so we are delighted but I have to give credit to Northern Ireland they came out really hard and strong at the start and really gave us a shock."
