The 2013 World Youth Netball Championships will take centre court this August in Glasgow. The Championships will be taking place at the world class national sports facility, the £113 million Emirates Arena between Thursday 22nd and Saturday 31st August and will feature some of the best young netball players from across the world. Host nation Scotland will battle it out against 19 other countries, from as far afield as Singapore and Samoa, in a bid to be crowned the best in the world at under-21 level. Among the nations confirmed are netball giants New Zealand, England and Australia.
The 10-day event, which is part of UK Sport’s £27million Gold Event Series, is the first world netball event to be staged in Scotland since 1987 and will take place less than a year before the sport takes centre stage at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Organisers are hoping to build on the success of the recent World Premier Club Challenge competition at the Emirates Arena, which was attended by around 2,500 netball fans.
The selected Scottish squad is: Beverly Campbell, Gillian Crozier, Lynsey Gallagher, Laura Gibson, Emily Gray, Emma Hardie, Sarah Kerr, Shaunagh McCuaig, Nicola McCleery, Erin McQuarie, Jo Pettitt and Bethany Sunderland.
The competing countries are: Australia, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, England, Fiji, Israel, Jamaica, Malta, Namibia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Papau New Guinea, Republic of Ireland, Samoa, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago and Wales.
The World Youth Netball Championships will comprise 70 games, held over a 10-day period. Every team will be guaranteed to play 7 games, and every team will be awarded a placing from 1st to 20th as a result.
In the preliminary games the 20 teams will be divided into four pools of five teams and will play a single round-robin, until semi final and final games to determine a winner.
The 2013 WYNC is being delivered in partnership between Glasgow Life on behalf of Glasgow City Council and Netball Scotland with funding support from EventScotland and UK Sport.
