Reena Esmail - New Work (BBC Co-Commission, European Premiere)

Beethoven - Piano Concerto No.3

Bruckner - Symphony No.6

Alice Sara Ott piano

Thomas Dausgaard conductor

Bruckner’s symphonies are often called “cathedrals in sound”. But that’s only part of the story, and his majestic Sixth Symphony is filled with the sounds of nature, with moments of profound quiet, and with a serene, radiant beauty that no other composer quite matches. Thomas Dausgaard loves it: “Like a supple and breathing organism” was how one critic described his Bruckner, praising “a flowing reading that grew with stature.” There aren’t many composers who thrive in Bruckner’s shadow, but Beethoven is unquestionably one of them, and here Alice Sara Ott plays his darkest concerto. And to begin, what could be more fitting than a new work from Reena Esmail, the Indian-American composer whose music is rich in a very personal spirituality?
