Brahms 1

(Pre-Concert Prelude at 6:45pm)

Kaija Saariaho - D’OM LE VRAI SENS (Man’s True Sense) for clarinet and orchestra

Brahms - Symphony No.1

Kari Kriikku clarinet

Thomas Dausgaard conductor

Brahms took years to write his First Symphony and when it was finally completed, critics dubbed it “Beethoven’s Tenth”. But from the wounded heartbeats of its opening bars to the hymn of triumph that crowns its closing moments, he’s very much his own man. The real challenge is to find another masterpiece powerful enough to match Brahms. Enter Kaija Saariaho, whose clarinet concerto was inspired, she says, by “six medieval tapestries, The Lady and the Unicorn, in which each tapestry depicts, with rich symbolism, the five senses and a ‘sixth sense’ – whatever that is (emotion? love?)”. With the Finnish clarinettist Kari Kriikku as our unicorn, the mystery will never have felt more enticing.
