The Firebird & Elgar’s Cello Concerto

(Pre-Concert Talk at 6:45pm)

Bartók - Dance Suite

Elgar - Cello Concerto

Stravinsky - The Firebird (complete ballet)

Dai Miyata cello

Thomas Dausgaard conductor

In a magical kingdom very like old Russia, a bird with feathers of flame confronts a green-clawed demon – and in Stravinsky’s The Firebird, every spark flashes dazzlingly to life. This was an era of strong emotions, so if you thought Elgar’s popular Cello Concerto was the sound of green fields and rolling hills, think again, as cellist Dai Miyata – praised by critics for his “sublime beauty of tone” – unites with Thomas Dausgaard to drive straight to its troubled, poetic soul. In Budapest, meanwhile, Bartók celebrated the city’s anniversary with a set of raw, flamboyant dances, torn straight from the soil of the Hungarian plain – a natural complement to the glowing colours and intoxicating rhythms of Stravinsky’s great ballet.

Pre-concert: 6.45pm in the Recital Room

Thomas Dausgaard discusses tonight’s concert and looks back at the past season.

Concert ends at approx. 9.25pm
