Gershwin & Ravel

(Pre-Concert Talk at 6:45pm)

Gershwin - An American in Paris

Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No.2

Ravel - L’enfant et les sortilèges*

Steven Osborne piano

Opera Students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland*

Martyn Brabbins conductor

A little boy has been very bad indeed. He breaks the crockery, slashes the wallpaper and torments his pet squirrel. If only those scattered and broken things could find a way to show him how it feels… and when the multi-coloured music of Maurice Ravel comes together with the witty and tender words of Colette, they just might. Expect a special kind of enchantment, as Martyn Brabbins shares his sense of theatre with our youthful cast, and sets the mood with Gershwin’s swinging salute to Paris at the height of the roaring twenties. Then pianist Steven Osborne marks his 50th birthday year by playing the concerto that Shostakovich wrote to celebrate his son Maxim’s 19th – music that’s young at heart in every sense.

Pre-concert: 6.45pm in the Recital Room

Professor Deborah Mawer from The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire introduces L’enfant et les sortilèges with a particular look at jazz and dance.

Concert ends at approx. 9.30pm
