Mahler 9

(Pre-Concert Talk at 6:45pm)

Tallis - Third Tune from Archbishop Parker’s Psalter (1567)

Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis

Mahler - Symphony No.9

Donald Runnicles conductor

Gustav Mahler was convinced he’d never get past his Ninth Symphony – and for some listeners, the very first notes seem to echo the word “farewell”. But this is a symphony of life, not death, and through distant fanfares, haunted waltzes and deep dark wells of terror and sorrow, it tells a tale of bittersweet memories, enduring love, and a creative spirit that acknowledges no limits. Each performance of Mahler’s Ninth is something of an occasion, and that goes double when our distinguished Conductor Emeritus Donald Runnicles returns to the podium. And as a prelude, Vaughan Williams’s famous Tallis Fantasia – preceded by the short, 16th century vocal work that inspired it and which brought the composer both inner peace and creative renewal.

Pre-concert: 6.45pm in the Recital Room

Professor Jeremy Barham of the University of Surrey talks about the theme of ‘farewell’ in music.
