Fiona Frank’s Candles, Conversions and Class: Five Generations of a Scottish Jewish Family was published earlier this year by the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre and follows the story of Rabbi Zvi David, Sophia Hoppenstein and their descendants. Fiona will recount some of the stories and help you record your own family stories.

A kosher buffet will be provided by the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities, and copies of the book will be on sale at £10 (normal price £12.50).

Rabbi Zvi David and Sophia Hoppenstein arrived in Edinburgh in the 1880s, and had nine children. Fiona Frank tracked down and interviewed their descendants throughout Scotland, England and as far as Cape Town, as part of her PhD research at the University of Strathclyde’s Scottish Oral History Centre.

In this session, Fiona will recount some of the fascinating stories she was told when researching her book - and then it will be your turn to write down some of the stories that have been handed down in your family, and - if you wish - to share your stories with others.
