The hugely romantic Cyrano de Bergerac is given a Glaswegian heart in a new production by Citizens Theatre Artistic Director Dominic Hill of Edwin Morgan’s Glaswegian-Scots translation.
The swashbuckling and flamboyant Cyrano’s low self-image prevents him from revealing his love to Roxanne. He lends his poetic skills instead to the outwardly handsome Christian, who wins Roxanne’s heart through his passionate ghost-written letters. Throughout his adventurous life, Cyrano continues to put quill to parchment, risking his life in the process, to express his true feelings.
A hugely ambitious ensemble of actors and musicians use Morgan’s chewy Scots verse to create a fresh take on the enduringly popular period piece, first seen in a legendary production by Communicado 25 years ago. Rostand’s original story was most famously given the Hollywood treatment in the Steve Martin comedy, Roxanne.
A vivid and completely joyous event, Cyrano de Bergerac will be a celebration of theatre itself, and is presented by the Citizens Theatre at Tramway and the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, and tours to Eden Court Theatre, Inverness.
