With individual backgrounds in folk, classical and jazz, dazzling Danish trio Dreamers' Circus first made waves soon after they formed in 2009, performing their customised version of Mozart’s 5th Violin Concerto – on accordion, piano, cittern and fiddle – with the Copenhagen Philharmonic. Their latest album, Blue White Gold, marks a ten year anniversary. It’s an album of instrumental music that is almost genre defying – elements of folk, of classical and of contemporary music are tinged with jazz-flavoured inflections but whatever the various bits that go into it the end result is an eclectic and occasionally beautiful collection of tunes for our times- musical mercury.
The gorgeous, peat smoked tone of Kathleen MacInnes’ Gaelic singing has earned the South Uist native international acclaim and featured in settings ranging from solo unaccompanied performances to adventures with Gaelic-electro band Niteworks, Arabic music specialist Tareq al Naseer and jazz duo Tommy Smith & Brian Kellock.
Rarely has a new band hit the ground running like Ímar. Formed in 2016, these Glasgow-based instrumental firebrands have already scored a Radio 2 Folk Award, and topped the iTunes world music chart with 2018’s second album Avalanche, meanwhile inciting audience euphoria wherever they play. “A force of nature” (Songlines)
The Womanly Voices of Jodhpur RIFF was recorded at 4am with eight local female Rajasthan musicians playing as the moon went down and the sun came up. The line-up includes Sumitra Das, Sundar Rao and her daughter Ganga Rao on vocals, alongside Mohini Devi also on vocals and her daughter Susheela - the very first Rajasthani woman folk artist to play the khartal instrument on an international platform (with her first performance at Jodhpur RIFF - Rajasthan International Folk Festival in 2019 and now as part of Celtic Connections 2021).
*This performance will be available to watch for one week after the live date to accommodate different time zones.
This performance is included in the Celtic Connections 2021 festival pass, so you will not need to purchase this event if you have already purchased a pass.
