So quipped Dmitri Shostakovich - qualified football referee, obsessive fan...and occasional composer. International football kicked off in the West End of Glasgow in 1872 when Scotland played England at West of Scotland's cricket grounds in Patrick. But why did industrial Glasgow then become the most important centre of the greatest team sport in the world?
