Fiddler and guitarist James Patrick Gavin is a major player on London’s folk scene, whose band work with Teyr, the Rad Orchestra and Jez Hellard spans styles from Celtic tradition to transglobal fusion. Many of those musical cohorts feature on his 2018 solo debut Chewing the Fat, which traces his Irish lineage from his grandparents’ lives in rural Fermanagh to his own cosmopolitan present. Recurring throughout are samples from two years’ worth of interviews with his grandmother, among a diverse, dynamic mix of traditional, original and borrowed material, enlivened with Gavin’s trademark quirky twists and turns. He’s joined here by a gang of pals who guested on the album.
