Late Night Studio Jazz: Square One with Andy Middleton
This international partnership brings together two generations of musicians from very different backgrounds - award-winning Scottish quartet Square One and leading Vienna-based saxophonist Andy Middleton (USA). In March 2018, Andy and Square One performed a tour of Scotland and recorded an album, entitled ‘Double Bind’, which will be launched at this concert tonight.
Andy Middleton is a veteran of the New York scene, who’s 30-year career has seen collaborations with world leaders in jazz, including Ralph Towner, Kenny Wheeler and Dave Holland.
Square One is a collective of Scotland’s finest emerging jazz talent, known for their brand of heavy-hitting melodic jazz and acclaimed 2016 debut album ‘In Motion’. The band features three winners of the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year.
The music that Square One and Andy perform constitutes a meeting of American and European jazz styles – from Andy’s roots in the New York scene to music informed by modern folk, world music and progressive rock, featuring virtuosic and sophisticated saxophone playing, soaring guitar solos and intricate interplay.
