With her elegant bearing, ultra-expressive voice, redoubtable spirit and absolute authority, Rhiannon Giddens carries the flame of pioneering singers and musicians Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Odetta and Nina Simone into current times.

Having first come to public attention as the singer, fiddler and banjo player with Grammy-winning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops, she began gaining recognition as a solo artist when she stole the show at the T Bone Burnett produced Another Day, Another Time concert at New York City’s Town Hall in 2013.

The album that followed in 2015, Tomorrow Is My Turn, showcased Giddens’ mastery of American vernacular styles from gospel to jazz, blues and country and its successor, Freedom Highway revealed a songwriter of substance who could also interpret civil rights-era classics with fire and complete empathy.

Here, the graduate of Oberlin Conservatory who studied opera and is fully conversant with the Gaelic tradition sings to sumptuous orchestrations. She will be joined by the Celtic Blues Orchestra; a bespoke symphony orchestra created for the show.
