All the Young Men in the Gay Bars
Ruth Coker Burks and Jeremy Atherton Lin
Chaired by Alim Kheraj
9.45pm – 10.45pm BST*
In 1986 Ruth Coker Burks visits a friend in hospital when she notices that the door to one of the patient's rooms is painted red. Out of impulse, Ruth enters the quarantined space and begins to care for the young man and in doing so, her life changes forever. As word spreads that she is the only person willing to help the young men afflicted by the growing AIDS crisis, Ruth goes from being an ordinary young mother to an accidental activist, ultimately advising Governor Bill Clinton on the national HIV-AIDS crisis, and in doing so becomes a beacon of hope to an otherwise spurned group of ailing gay men on the fringes of society. All the Young Men is her extraordinary memoir.
From leather parties in the Castro to Gay Liberation Front touch-ins; from disco at Studio One to dark rooms in Vauxhall railway arches, the gay bar has long been a place of joy, solidarity and sexual expression. But around the world, gay bars are closing. In Gay Bar Jeremy Atherton Lin rediscovers the sparkling, richly individual history of the party boys and renegades who lived and loved in these spaces.
