'Aurora' Update
The concert scheduled for Friday 15 October was originally entitled 'Aurora' and was to have included the UK Premiere of Eötvös' double bass concerto of the same name, performed by Nikita Naumov.
Unfortunately, this is no longer possible, but the rest of the programme remains the same, with delightful additions from Bach and Mozart, and eminent Austrian conductor Thomas Zehetmair still at the helm and on violin.
Updated programme
BACH Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041
MOZART (arr. Zehetmair) String Trio fragment, K. Anhang 66
MENDELSSOHN Overture Die schöne Melusine
HAYDN Symphony No 92 in G Major 'Oxford'
Thomas Zehetmair Conductor/Violin
Eminent Austrian musician Thomas Zehetmair takes centre stage with the SCO players in this compelling concert, as violin soloist, conductor and even arranger/composer.
Zehetmair is the sparkling soloist amid the lavish contrapuntal invention of Bach’s propulsive A minor Violin Concerto. And he pays his own, personal tribute to Mozart in his witty arrangement/completion of the earlier composer’s G major String Trio, of which barely 100 bars survive.
The young Felix Mendelssohn was captivated by the medieval legend of the water sprite Melusine and her human lover, and conjured from it one of his most magical and evocative creations.
Closer to home, Joseph Haydn celebrated the honorary doctorate he received from the University of Oxford with his Symphony No 92 – and its energy, elegance and wit fitted the occasion to a tee.
This concert features socially distanced seating.
