First performed in January 2019 – winning an extended standing ovation - Sky is a concerto by acclaimed US composer Michael Torke, inspired by and written for the dazzling Kentucky-born classical violinist and bluegrass fiddler Tessa Lark, its soloist again for tonight’s European première, with our own Royal Scottish National Orchestra. A multi-award-winning alumna of both New England Conservatory and the Juilliard School, Lark has collaborated with such cross-genre greats as Mitsuko Uchida, Itzhak Perlman, Edgar Meyer and Mark O’Connor, while Gramophone calls Torke’s oeuvre “some of the most optimistic, joyful and thoroughly uplifting music to appear in recent years”.

Written by Scottish composer Phamie Gow in 2000 at the age of 19, ‘Lammermuir’ gained her international acclaim, with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation terming her "a young prodigy", whose "hauntingly evocative pieces sound like glorious traditional airs". Since then Phamie has released 9 albums, performed in major concert halls around the world, and worked with top calibre artists such as Philip Glass and Carlos Nuñez. Phamie returns to Celtic Connections with a new symphonic collaboration featuring the original cast of Alasdair Fraser, Mairi Campbell plus special guests including the RSNO, Jarlath Henderson and more.
