Singer, composer and tireless cross-cultural explorer Susheela Raman’s latest project sees her working with contemporary Indonesian gamelan players, aligning her sublime voice with the shimmering, mercurial sonorities of the tuned gongs and metallophones which, she says, have “informed all smart music-makers from Debussy and Satie to John Cage, Miles Davis, Steve Reich and Sonic Youth.”
As with all her music, this new collaboration expresses and celebrates the spirit of human connection and commonality between cultures. The performance also features Raman’s longtime collaborator Sam Mills (guitar), the Heliocentrics’ Malcolm Catto (drums), Lucie Antunes (marimba/vibraphone), Pirashanna Thevarajah (Indian percussion), Dudley Phillips (bass), and string players from the experimental Phaedra Ensemble.
This new project by Tom Bancroft starts with the bodhran and the tabla and a drone, adds Indian Classical Violin and improvising jazz guitar, and continues adding layers and voices from different traditions, in a creative new project that focuses on the common ground between Scottish music, jazz, Indian music and electronica. In tonight's concert they will be performing tracks from their up and coming album “Love & Stillness”.
Sharat Chandra Srivastava (violin), Gyan Singh (tabla), Tom Bancroft (bodhran & drums), Graeme Stephen (guitar & loops), Sophie Bancroft (voice), Gina Rae (voice), Inge Thomson (voice).
