Inspired by backstage and after-hours festival sessions, where musicians from different traditions informally share tunes and styles, The Conundrum brings together an international array of celebrated contemporary pipers, highlighting the connections and contrasts between their instruments and repertoire. The concert comprises a kind of musical relay, showcasing each piper in individual sets before they invite the next onstage to perform together. Together with top Highland piper Finlay MacDonald, Director of Piping at The National Piping Centre, the line-up features Celtic Connections favourite Michael McGoldrick on the uilleann pipes, alongside artists representing other Celtic traditions including Andy May on Northumbrian pipes, and Susana Seivane on gaita. From Estonia, Cätlin Mägi is not only a leading exponent of that country’s bagpipe, the torupill, but also a remarkable virtuoso on jaw harp , creating otherworldly multi-layered soundscapes via electronic looping techniques, joined here in a duo with Karoliina Kreintaal on violin. Accompanying the pipers throughout, a hand-picked house band includes guitarist Ross Martin, Steven Blake on keyboards, and bodhran player David Foley.
