An international triple bill of contemporary Celtic acts, all of whom delivered outstanding new albums in 2018. Multi-award-winning Scottish trio Talisk – concertina dynamo Mohsen Amini, fiddler Hayley Keenan and guitarist Graeme Armstrong – excelled themselves once again with Beyond, enhancing the signature pyrotechnics of their intricately layered arrangements with subtle electronic effects, fresh sonic textures and a redoubled sense of adventure.
Francophone Canadian trio Vishtèn’s latest release, Horizons, continues to refine their vibrantly distinctive spin on traditional Acadian music, interweaving rock, indie and ambient sounds into their mix of fiddle, guitar, accordion, octave mandolin, whistles, piano, bodhrán, jaw harp and foot-percussion, plus rousing chorus songs.
At once a deep-dyed traditionalist and an intrepid innovator within Galician folk music, percussionist, piper and singer Xabier Diaz – formerly a member of the mighty Berrogüetto – joined forces on his recent release Noró with Adufeiras de Salitre, an all-female ensemble combining radiantly unified vocals and polyrhythmic pandeiras accompaniment.
