Even though one lives in Sheffield and the other in Toulouse, the fabled affinity of siblings radiates through the music of Rowan and Anna Rheingans, alchemising its disparate elements into their own sublimely singular sound. Drawing on English, Occitan French and Scandinavian folk sources, together with a love of contemporary poetry, their seamless blend of reimagined traditional material and arresting original compositions interweaves the sisters’ lustrous vocals with fiddles, banjo, psaltery, bansitar (a banjo/sitar hybrid invented by their instrument-maker father) and percussion. Their 2018 third album Bright Field, a multi-layered meditation on nature, named for R.S. Thomas’s celebrated verse epiphany, has been hailed as their finest to date.
