Study at The Mitchell Library

We have 200 study spaces available in The Mitchell Library, over 5 public floors.

Make a choice from the preserved quietness of Level 2 Baillie’s Reading Room to the more vibrant atmosphere of Granville St.  We offer dedicated study rooms to hire (£5, £2.50 conc per day) if you prefer your own space.

With superfast broadband and free WiFi across all floors, we offer connected space and a welcoming environment for everyone’s personal or group study needs.  Please ask a member of staff if you need assistance or guidance.

Ground Floor

This main thoroughfare and exhibition space also houses our licensed café, as well as the Mitchell Theatre.

This area is very popular for informal meetings for individuals, business, tutors and families as well as a great place to soak up the atmosphere.

People who enjoy working in a busy space can access PCs, study tables and study booths, and the area is well supported by our main enquiry desk.

Pop-Up events and exhibitions, as well as programmed activities are often delivered from Granville St.

The Leisure and Lifestyle library can also be found on the ground floor.

First floor

The Business & Intellectual Property Centre is located on the first floor.

If you’re looking to start, grow or run a business, Business & IP Centre Glasgow can help. We have trained staff to assist with one-to-one session and workshops as well as free resources.

Second floor

The Baillie’s Reading Room is a dedicated quiet area, with a seating arrangement conducive to solo study. Visitors are welcome to power their devices where sockets are located beside individual study tables.

We ask that visitors to this area ensure that their mobiles are silenced, and any calls are made outside in the foyer.

Third floor

Level 3 is also a quiet space, with a collection of legal and consumer rights materials supporting the Central Citizens Advice Bureau which is also located on this floor.

Those requiring an appointment with CAB should proceed directly to level 3 and present at the dedicated CAB reception desk.  Supporting legal material and consumers’ information is in the adjoining room, with additional study tables and library assistance should it be required.

Fourth floor

Most general information and research support will be found here, as well as books and other materials which are not on open access.  30 PCs, study tables and personal study rooms available for hire(link) this includes 5 music practice rooms which can be hired by the hour; also assistants and printing facilities.

Fifth floor

Level 5 has study space for researchers of local and family history, as well as access and assistance to our rare or special collections including newspapers. Larger map tables as well as PCs and general study tables are located here, as well as study rooms for individual day hire.

Glasgow Archives offers a supervised search room for patrons accessing Archival materials only.
