Prepare to be Active

Once you have made the decision to get active, the next steps couldn’t be easier. Every activity has its own benefits, whether you are looking for something to do in the house, outside or at a local venue. Here are a few things to consider to help becoming more active easier.

If you are short on time, being active in your house is a great way to get started. Just make sure you have enough space and you can try some of these 10 minute workouts in your living room.

Being outdoors and making the most of Glasgow is a great and easy way to become more active but with our ever changing weather can be a bit unpredictable. The best thing about getting active outdoors is that it is free and flexible. Here are some tips for making the most of being active outside:

  • Wear layers of clothes that you can take off if you get too warm
  • Wear suitable clothing e.g. waterproof for those rainy days and a lightweight jacket for the sunnier ones.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Trainers are great but not necessary, comfort first.
  • Plan your route. Maybe make plans to meet a friend somewhere or see some of Glasgow’s sights.
  • Take some water with you to keep you hydrated.
  • If you fancy a scheduled activity like a buggy walk or outdoor yoga, try phoning ahead to confirm the meeting point and make sure the session is going ahead as planned.

You can also make the most of the community venues and sports centres in your local area by trying out some of the great activities available. Here are some tips for making the most of being active in a venue:

  • Plan how you are getting there, can you walk, are there buses or a car park?
  • If you are going to a scheduled activity like a fitness class, check the start times and plan ahead to arrive on time.
  • Wear comfortable, appropriate clothing and footwear. It doesn’t need to be lycra, just something you can move in.
  • Take some water with you to keep you hydrated.
  • Some venues have lockers so if you would like to use them, keep in mind you may need some change but reception desks will often help out with this if need be.

All of these things will help make your physical activity journey a bit easier however if you forget to bring water or don’t have on a heavy enough jacket, it’s ok. You can learn from each experience and use this to try again the next time.
