Shalom's Story

Macmillan @ Glasgow Libraries means a lot to me as the service provides essential information and support to those who perhaps would not have had the opportunity to get additional support. Having someone to talk to in an easy environment reduces the pain they might be going through. For volunteers like me and others, being compassionate and empathetic is key to delivering the service.

I have been volunteering with Macmillan @ Glasgow Libraries since 2013 and I love every bit of it.

"I wanted to use my free time to help other people"
I got involved as a volunteer because I wanted to use my free time to help other people in my community, especially people affected by cancer.

My aims and expectations for volunteering with Macmillan @ Glasgow Libraries were to get involved in the projects and to raise more awareness for those who do not know the services in our communities are there. Being a Macmillan Cancer Information & Support Volunteer I have developed more approachable skills and more of a willingness to help people.

I personally get satisfaction and fulfilment of the spirit when I see people who have received one or more of our services - including referrals to other organisations - smile.

On many occasions I have heard people say they didn’t know that this kind of service exists. I tell them we don’t only give out leaflets, there are other services such as complementary therapies, counselling etc. and they are happy to be referred onto them for further support. We actually make all the difference when people come to the service looking stressed or sad and leave feeling relaxed with a happy face.

"we are impartial, we listen, and we are willing to help people"
The services in libraries have been successful because it is easily accessible - anyone in the community can walk into their local library without the need to book an appointment to see us. It is a unique service, our staff and volunteers are well trained, we are impartial, we listen, and we are willing to help people.

I would recommend anyone looking to volunteer to join Macmillan @ Glasgow Libraries to give their time as it is precious and fulfilling. I really enjoy it!
