Glasgow Life Sport team complete Relay Your Way stage to support young people with disabilities

A group of Glasgow Life Sport colleagues who ran across Glasgow for charity have raised more than £600 for an organisation which supports children with disabilities.

The determined team donned their running trainers for the Relay Your Way event in aid of Cerebra, whose work helps the 1.5 million young people with disabilities in the UK, including 500,000 children living with brain conditions.

Team members Paul Mclean, Steven MacDonald, Gillian McGuire, Jennifer McVerry, Stephanie MacLeod, Heather MacLeod, Philip Peek, Lianne Thomas and Michelle Bauge ran from Dunard Primary School in Maryhill to Hollybrook Academy in Govanhill in 45 minutes on 3 June to complete the 6.4km fifth stage of Relay Your Way.

Relay Your Way is an epic relay across 250 stages which invites people to carry a baton throughout Britain by running, guide running, wheeling, cycling on tandem bikes and para surfing around the country. The event sends the powerful message that sport, adventure and play should be inclusive to all.

Relay Your Way visits special educational needs, additional support needs and mainstream schools, involving over 10,000 pupils in the initiative. It also takes in sporting, cultural and community venues, events and projects featuring young people with disabilities and works with sport clubs, sport bodies, and councils to bring people together to celebrate the importance of inclusive sport.

After launching in Glasgow, Relay Your Way travelled 2,500km through almost every major city in Britain. The event is due to finish at the Parallel Windsor Festival of Inclusivity on Sunday 6 July.

Glasgow Life Sport was approached to be a partner organisation in 2024 to help get local clubs, schools and Glasgow Club users involved.

Team member Philip Peek said: “The run was a real success, and the weather was very kind to us. We arrived at Dunard Primary to collect the baton and received a hero’s welcome from the whole school. The baton was then passed over and the nine of us went on our way down through the city centre en route to Hollybrook Academy. After reaching Hollybrook, we were welcomed into the school to pass on the baton to the students who were running laps round the playground and celebrating the arrival of the baton.

“It was a great experience to bond with colleagues outside the usual office environment, particularly when it was over physical activity, something we are all incredibly passionate about. At the end of the run, everyone was buzzing and commented on how much they enjoyed the overall experience and how next time we can hopefully bring more colleagues along on the journey. We would like to thank all our colleagues and family members who took the time to generously donate and support our efforts.”

Fellow team member Stephanie MacLeod said: “I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in Relay Your Way. It was a great day with colleagues, all supporting each other and having fun along the way.”
