Phase 1, Ward 1, An Ideal Shopping List

The end result... a permanent portable piece of textile which gives voice to the community.
As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities Artists in Residence programme for Ward 1, Linn, Deirdre Nelson delivered An Ideal Shopping List, a playful and participatory project that used textiles to spark conversation and creativity.
Drawing on her background in textiles, Deirdre engaged with groups across the ward through bunting workshops, mapping exercises, embroidery, drawing, and dyeing sessions. Central to her residency was a long roll of pristine fabric, which acted as An Ideal Shopping List for the community. Residents were invited to stitch or write their hopes for the area onto it.
This accessible artwork travelled with Deirdre to community litter picks, family fun days, plant sales, networking breakfasts and art groups. Through informal exchanges, participants shared both cultural wishes and broader concerns, using the list as a creative platform for local voices to be heard. The project brought gentle activism into everyday spaces, stitching together ideas for Linn’s future.
