Phase 1, Ward 15, A Chance to be Reflective

Being creative keeps your mind alive, whether it’s a poem or a painting.
As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities Artists in Residence programme for Ward 15, Maryhill, Louise Nolan delivered A Chance to be Reflective, a programme of creative activity shaped through community consultation.
Louise engaged a cross-section of Maryhill residents through workshops that explored storytelling, filmmaking, textiles, ceramics, and collage. She worked with Addaction and attendees of their services to celebrate Glasgow’s storytelling tradition. She also held textile recycling sessions with a local women’s recovery group to create handmade tweed brooches, which were later displayed and sold at Maryhill Hub’s Craft and Art Fayre.
Drop-in Portrait Cafés invited people to draw and discuss the role of creativity in recovery and wellbeing, while activities like badge-making and collage evolved into designs for plates.
Throughout the residency, Louise focused on connecting different groups, offering space for reflection and discussion. A Chance to be Reflective explored barriers to participation and mental health, highlighting the power of creative activity to support wellbeing and enrich community identity, to build stronger, more connected neighbourhoods.
