Phase 2, Ward 1, Exploring Sustainability
As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities Artists in Residence programme for Ward 1, Linn, Deirdre Nelson delivered a project exploring the themes of food, culture, and sustainability through drawing and making.
Deirdre engaged local communities through activities focused on food mapping, natural dyeing, and food growing. Working with existing community groups, she created opportunities for people to come together around the shared experience of food. Using waste materials like onion skins, tea, and coffee, Deirdre produced natural dyes and shared these with local craft and knitting groups in Castlemilk.
At Carmunnock Primary School, children created drawings of fruit and vegetables, explored their origins, and discussed food miles and sustainable food practices. These creative activities opened up meaningful conversations about access to fresh produce and the ward’s limited supermarket provision.
Through making and dialogue, the project celebrated local knowledge and encouraged deeper thinking about food resilience in the Linn community.
