Ward 5, Phase 2, Music for Govan

As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities Artists in Residence programme for Ward 5, Govan, The Glasgow Barons delivered a series of innovative music projects that supported local communities. Through online meetings, they developed four core initiatives.

Musicians in Exile worked with asylum-seeking musicians to create music videos every 4–6 weeks. The Linties group engaged senior residents in Govan through online piano sing-alongs. Recovery Rap, led by Steg G from Sunny G FM, a community radio station, coached people in addiction recovery to write and perform their own raps. The Govan Song Club supported local musicians in recording songs and helped them build confidence.

Alongside these projects, The Glasgow Barons partnered with Hazelwood School, Riverside Primary School and St Saviour’s Primary School, using rhythm and song to engage pupils in creative learning. At Govan High School, the new Principal Teacher of Music, Jennifer Andrew, commissioned The Glasgow Barons to produce videos exploring instrumental techniques for secondary learners.

The Glasgow Barons continued work developed in Phase 2 during Phase 3, working with the pre-established groups in person to further develop confidence and access to music.
