Phase 2, Ward 9, I Belong to Calton

School children in Elcho park celebrate a new community mural, they are laughing and taking photos.
Meeting people who understand where my heart lies and empathise with me. This class has quite literally saved my life a few times.

As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities Artists in Residence programme for Ward 9, Calton, artists John Binnie, Tina Freeland, and Robin Mitchell delivered a creative programme using photography, drama and music to engage multigenerational groups across the area, including local schools and community groups.

They led 15 online workshops with NHS Restart, working with eight participants on drama warm-ups, writing, improvisation, acting and songwriting. Weekly photography prompts inspired reflections on themes such as lockdown, home and the future.

Alongside these sessions, the team delivered 200 arts and crafts packages to elderly and vulnerable residents, encouraging them to respond through drawing, writing, and music. These creative responses were compiled into a community booklet titled I Belong to Calton.

The project culminated in a two-day regeneration of Elcho Gardens, during which 24 people from 6 local groups helped create a vibrant mural. A final celebration event brought participants together to showcase the new artwork and share stories from the project in the transformed community space.
