Pupils want to create change in their local area and, through working with Saffy, are taking steps to share their views and participate in learning for sustainability across all stages of our school.

As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities Artists in Residence programme for Ward 16, Canal, Saffy Setohy led Club of Nature, a creative engagement project developed in collaboration with St Teresa’s Primary School and artist Jamie Wardrop.

This work was delivered as part of Create 4 Glasgow, a participatory art project that built on the legacy of COP26 and gave voice to Glasgow’s young people and their environmental priorities.

The project focused on Cowlairs Park, a large post-industrial area in Possilpark that has lain ‘derelict’ for over 30 years. Despite issues such as fly-tipping, the site remains an everyday part of life for many local residents.

Through workshops, the children explored their connections to the land and shared their hopes for its future. They used creative methods to imagine new uses for the space and express their care for the environment.

A shared focus on safe, green routes to school strengthened the relationship with the school and parents, and a Pupil Sustainability Committee was established.

Club of Nature empowered young people to reimagine their local area and gave voice to their aspirations for positive change.
