Phase 3, Ward 3, If Trees Could Talk

As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities Artists in Residence programme for Ward 3, Greater Pollok, Hannah Brackston and Daniele Sambo, with support from artist Roos Dijkhuizen, delivered a series of workshops and public events with schools and young people.

This work was delivered as part of Create 4 Glasgow, a participatory art project that built on the legacy of COP26 and gave voice to Glasgow's young people and their environmental priorities.

In the lead-up to COP26, the artist ran If Trees Could Talk workshops, exploring the stories and significance of some of the ward’s historic trees. Young participants used natural dyeing and textile techniques to create banners reflecting their environmental concerns. These were exhibited at The Govan Free State (GalGael Trust) and 3 Hills Community Garden during COP26.

Building on this work, the artists collaborated with Gowanbank Primary School to develop a project focused on water pollution. Greater Pollok is home to several watercourses, including the White Cart, Brock Burn and Levern Water, many of which are affected by littering. Following discussions at local community meetings, the artists supported pupils in exploring these concerns creatively. Together, they imagined and designed floating sculptures and architectural interventions to tackle pollution and improve local waterways, offering new possibilities for recreation, biodiversity and well-being.
