Phase 3, Ward 9, News Broadcast

This project is invaluable for the children. Post-Christmas is such a difficult time for the children. Seeing them having fun and being creative with outside artists is a real tonic. John, Tina and Robin have built a real relationship with the school children over each phase of Artists In Residence.
As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities Artists in Residence programme in Ward 9, Calton, artist collective John Binnie, Tina Freeland and Robin Mitchell collaborated with local groups including NHS Restart Bridgeton, Calton Heritage and Learning Centre, St Anne’s Primary, and Riverbank Primary. Through drama, music, samba, songwriting, and photography workshops, participants explored their experiences of the pandemic, environmental concerns, and aspirations for the future.
This work was delivered as part of Create 4 Glasgow, a participatory art project which built on the legacy of COP26, giving voice to Glasgow's young people and their environmental priorities.
A highlight of the residency was the creation of News Broadcast, a climate-themed video by St Anne’s Primary pupils. In this video, students expressed their concerns about climate change and urged world leaders to act, showcasing their solutions. The project included playground drama and music workshops, where pupils discussed the role of the arts in addressing environmental issues.
Additionally, a collaborative event brought together pupils from St Anne’s and Riverbank Primary Schools. Meeting for the first time, they engaged in outdoor activities along Riverbank Primary’s walkway to Cuningar Loop Park. The children displayed photographs and placards, interacted with passersby about climate change, and participated in a parade. Led by Tina Freeland, a third of the children formed a parade band, while the rest, guided by John Binnie, marched as climate change protesters, chanting “Cuningar Loop – Climate Change” as they crossed the footbridge into the park.
