Phase 4, North East Community Planning Partnership Area, UCI Championships Celebrations

As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities: Artists in Communities programme in the North East Community Planning Partnership Area, John Binnie, Tina Freeland, and Robin Mitchell delivered art, drama, and music workshops that offered cultural and creative opportunities to schools and community groups.
John, Tina and Robin delivered workshops with Sandaig Primary School, Swinton Primary School, Glendale Gaelic Primary / Bunsgoil Ghàidhlig Ghleann Dail, Glasgow Gaelic Primary School / Bunsgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschul, NHS Restart and Lodging House Mission 360. During these workshops, the artists explored themes of cycling and storytelling in the lead-up to the UCI Cycling World Championships.
Children from Sandaig and Swinton created large-scale collaborative friezes of active travel in their neighbourhoods, while NHS Restart writers developed new work performed by pupils at Dalmarnock and St Anne’s Primary. John, Tina, and Robin also collaborated with Gaelic artist Màiri Morrison to create bilingual performances based on Gaelic stories and songs shared by pupils during UCI festivities.
The celebrations culminated in a vibrant samba bicycle bell band at Tollcross Park and an afternoon tea event at Elcho Gardens, which included Velocity’s Singing for Fun Group. Both events showcased community-made art, including bike bunting, and featured music, storytelling and performances shaped through months of collaborative workshops.
