Phase 4, South Community Planning Partnership Area, Circling Southside

As part of Glasgow Life’s Artists in Communities programme in the South Community Planning Partnership Area, Deirdre Nelson delivered Circling Southside.

Circling Southside used connections and themes developed through Artist in Residence to explore themes of food and nature cycles, the circular economy and cycling, creating creative connections between communities in Kings Park, Toryglen and Castlemilk.

Deirdre collaborated with Friends of Kings Park and Mobile Print Studio to offer free, accessible creative opportunities for families in the area. At Kirkriggs Primary School, Deirdre led workshops with pupils with additional support needs to create bunting and decorations for community events, alongside sculptural works inspired by cycling, using parts donated by Bike for Good.

Deirdre delivered repair cafés in partnership with Ardenglen Housing Association and Cassiltoun Housing Association and worked with Glasgow Community Food Network, facilitating workshops around sustainability in Toryglen.

In the lead-up to the UCI Cycling World Championships, Deirdre partnered with Women on Wheels to host family workshops, transforming recycled inner tubes into artworks.

During the Championships, Deirdre collaborated with fellow Artists in Communities Hannah Brackston, Daniele Sambo and The Village Storytelling Centre to host a celebratory event at the Yoga Barn in Pollok Park, welcoming Think Malawi cyclists with storytelling, printmaking and music.
