Phase 5, North West Community Planning Partnership Area

As part of Glasgow Life’s Artists in Communities programme, Green Economy Iteration in the North East and South Community Planning Partnership Areas, In the Making Glasgow delivered creative workshops with four local primary schools.

The project aimed to connect children with the environmental issues impacting their daily lives through imagination and participation.

Working with St Paul’s, Thornwood, Whiteinch and St Patrick’s Primary Schools, the artists designed sessions that introduced creative thinking through drawing, observation, and design. Pupils were encouraged to explore their local environments, often dominated by roads, traffic pollution and a lack of green space, using creative techniques that drew attention to these issues.

The workshops inspired the young people to imagine future cities through the lens of climate justice, exploring themes such as active travel, food security, and community wellbeing. They studied the work of designers like Margaret Calvert and mapped their own routes to school, identifying opportunities for safer and healthier neighbourhoods.

This work contributed directly to three environmentally responsible local campaigns: a Sustrans’ cycle route, supporting a new community food market in Whiteinch, and advocating for improvements to local public spaces.

Workshops led to the creation of semi-permanent public artworks, one at Thornwood roundabout and another at the Whiteinch Food Market, co-designed by pupils and artists.

In the Making, empowered children to see themselves as agents of change by offering creative and civic engagement tools.
