Phase 5, South Community Planning Partnership Area, Southside Sustainability

“Deirdre’s visits to our school are always greatly appreciated by my pupils... the impact has benefited them beyond the classroom by assisting with their decision-making skills, social interactions and self-regulation. The end-of-session showcase at their local park was a particular highlight.

As part of Glasgow Life’s Artists in Communities programme, Green Economy Iteration, in the South Community Planning Partnership Area, Deirdre Nelson delivered workshops and activities supporting existing green wellbeing and circular economy initiatives.

Deirdre collaborated with local schools, housing associations and repair cafés to deliver climate-focused projects centred on food, waste, repair and exchange themes. Working with professionals from the repair and reuse sectors, she facilitated discussions and design sessions with young people. These culminated in a youth-led clothes swap and repair event reflecting the culture and values of the local community, with young participants taking the lead in shaping and delivering the event.

Deirdre also ran a series of creative workshops, including T-shirt design sessions with Kirkriggs Primary School, which they exhibited in their local park. She worked alongside Youth Complex’s Bike Repair group to capture stories of circular economies through sound and image and co-ran natural dye workshops with Julia Billings.

These events brought different groups together and increased creative opportunities to mend, maintain, repair and exchange clothing and other items. Through creative learning, participants were taught new practical skills in sustainability and creative, collaborative, and organisational skills, which they shared with the wider community.
