Ward 11, Phase 2 and 3, Zero Waste for Hillhead

As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities Artists in Residence programme for Ward 11, Hillhead, Janie Nicoll embedded herself in the local community, working online with established groups, including Zero Waste Sunday Social, a Women’s Solidarity group, and Wool Repair workshops.
Janie co-hosted Becoming Woodlands with Amy Clarkson, a six-week online collaborative project involving 15 local residents. The sessions encouraged creative engagement through foraging, fermentation, biodiversity, writing, collage, and mushroom growing. The project culminated in a sharing event on Earth Day, featuring a collaborative window display at Woodlands Workspace and a spoken word performance based on group-generated text.
Janie also collaborated with local primary schools to explore improving the area’s traffic safety. Pupils engaged in discussions with the school’s Transport Group, focusing on increasing the visibility of pedestrian crossings, particularly at Park Road and Eildon Street. These conversations were shared with local councillor Martha Wardrop to support future improvements.
Janie continued the work developed in Phase 2 during Phase 3, working with the Woodlands Community to deliver Mending Weekly workshops.
