Artist in residence
We are delighted to be bringing back an Artist in Residence for the 2022 Mela, to work with audiences and capture stories relating to the local South Asian community and the natural world.
As part of Scotland’s Year of Stories, we are excited to be working with interdisciplinary artist Hamshya, a 2018 from the Glasgow School of Art. Hamshya will be working with Mela participants and audiences to explore:
- Local stories of the Mela’s host site in Kelvingrove park
- Tales of woodland fairy culture reimagined through a South Asian lens
- Stories of the local South Asian community’s relationship with the natural world.
The focus of this project, bringing together tales of the natural world and of the South Asian diaspora, follows on from Glasgow's hosting of COP26 and feedback from young Mela participants who stressed the importance of this topic to them, and shared with us their questioning on whether natural spaces like Kelvingrove park would still be at the heart of Glasgow in 30 years’ time.
Hamshya will offer a programme of participatory arts activities such as walking tours and photography sessions throughout the day, culminating in a small collection of art pieces co-created with the Mela audience, which will capture the stories explored through this project.
This event has been supported by the Year of Stories 2022 Community Stories Fund.
This fund is being delivered in partnership between VisitScotland and Museums Galleries Scotland with support from National Lottery Heritage Fund thanks to National Lottery players.
