All the equipment that you will need to ride the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome is available to hire at the venue. All you need to do is let us know your size and collect the equipment when you arrive at the Hire Station.

Bikes

Don't worry if you don't know what size of bike frame you will need; we can work this out from your height.

The minimum height for our track bikes is 1.45m (4ft 9in)

Helmets

Wearing a helmet is mandatory at all times when riding on the velodrome.

A helmet is provided free of charge with all bike hires and is available in small, medium, and large sizes. Each helmet can be adjusted for a secure and comfortable fit.

You are welcome to bring your own helmet, as long as it meets national safety standards and has no peak attached.

Shoes

Shoes will be provided for all accreditation sessions. You may also wear your own cleated cycling shoes during track sessions.

Our hire bikes are fitted with Look Keo pedals, so only Look Keo cleated shoes are compatible. Please note that other cleat types (even if marked as compatible) may not work properly. Personal pedals cannot be used on our hire bikes.

Clothing

We recommend wearing a cycling jersey or a close-fitting top. Shoulders must be covered at all times. For comfort and flexibility, two thin layers are ideal.

Cycling or sports shorts are best, but close-fitting tracksuit or jogging bottoms are also acceptable. Loose clothing should be avoided, as it can get caught in the wheels or chain.

For your safety, DO NOT carry anything in your pockets while on the track.

If you are bringing your own bike to the velodrome it has to be a bike intended for track use.

Please ensure that:

  • The frame does not have any braze on additions
  • Track drop outs are fitted
  • It has tyres that are intended for track use
  • New tyres have been properly prepared
  • Bar ends are fitted and secure in handlebars
  • There are no quick release spindles
  • Wheel spindles do not extend beyond the track nuts, front and rear, and are sawn off flush with the nut and filed smooth
  • 165 cranks with a bottom bracket height of 285mm or greater (measured from floor to centre of bottom bracket)
