From around the 1400s, the potters of Italy produced some of the most beautiful and refined ceramics of the Renaissance. Inspired by the lustrous dishes of Muslim Spain, these luxurious and richly glazed ceramics, known as maiolica, were exported throughout Europe and catered for a wide clientele, including some of Europe’s most powerful and sophisticated families.
Painted with vibrant colour and intricate designs in a variety of styles, the artisans of Italy took inspiration from the natural world, history, mythology, and legend. This tour will present a range of pieces and showcase the great variety of goods that flowed from the maiolica workshops of Italy, many of which appear just as bright and alluring today as they did 500 years ago.
