Phase 2, Ward 22, Tales Fae the East

There are so many more human stories to be celebrated. Finding people to speak to, hearing their take on their lives and their communities, is a great way to promote and engage communities.
As part of Glasgow Life’s Creative Communities Artists in Residence programme for Ward 22, artist Alasdair Satchel and photographer Tim Morozzo delivered Tales Fae the East, a podcast, portrait, and outreach project exploring everyday life in Glasgow’s East End.
Focusing on Dennistoun, Haghill and Sighthill, the project gathered stories from residents across generations, reflecting the area’s diverse social history and contemporary experiences. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, the team recorded 18 in-depth podcasts featuring over 22 community voices, each accompanied by a photographic portrait.
Themes ranged from housing and identity to family heritage and local change. A recurring concern was the need for sustainable housing, which led to a rich dialogue between academic Seán Damer and Irene McInnes, co-founder of Reidvale Housing Association.
The final episode explored the role of Gaelic in the city as part of Glasgow Life’s GUIR! project. Tales Fae the East offered an authentic, creative platform for reflection, celebration and future connection.
Tales Fae the East shines a light on everyday voices, celebrating local heritage and contemporary life with authenticity and warmth.
Alasdair and Tim continued work developed in Phase 2 during Phase 3, allowing them to work in person with the community and create an online archive of the stories shared. Listen to all episodes of Tales Fae the East.
