Chiaroscuro flatter shadows sharper light
Bold contrasts in light and shade ripple and storm through this evening of works for cello and piano.
It begins with Schubert turned upside-down. As high becomes low, and vice versa, light and dark swap places. If music were a photograph, these would be the negatives.
The sublime G major Piano Sonata follows, a work glowing with tonal surprises.
The seductive iridescence of Rachmaninoff’s sound world completes the programme in a Schubert-inspired “Moment Musical” and the brilliant, epic Sonata in G minor for Cello and Piano.
