Dvořák’s New World Symphony

(Pre-Concert Talk at 6:45pm)

Bartók - Divertimento

Dvořák - Cello Concerto

Dvořák - Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’

Sheku Kanneh-Mason cello

Folk musicians

Thomas Dausgaard conductor

Antonín Dvořák never forgot his roots. “I shall always remain just what I was: a simple Czech musician”, he wrote, and once you’ve heard the folk music that inspired him, you’ll understand why. His Cello Concerto is arguably the greatest work of its kind ever composed, and the chance to hear it played by Sheku Kanneh-Mason would be exciting whatever the occasion. And his ‘New World’ symphony is one of those pieces that transcends time and place. But they both grow from the sounds of Dvořák’s native Czech countryside; just as Bartók found his inspiration in the music of rural Hungary. With the aid of folk musicians, Thomas Dausgaard celebrates those roots – and brings three masterpieces vibrantly to life.

Pre-concert: 6.45pm in the Recital Room
