Born into one of West Africa’s principal griot families, multitalented Gambian/British artist Sona Jobarteh is the first woman of such lineage to attain virtuoso status on the kora, interrupting seven centuries of exclusively male tradition. Combining this inheritance with a Western classical training, she has since forged her own genre-spanning style of composition and performance, showcased on her acclaimed 2011 debut album Fasiya – ‘heritage’ -together with her supple, sensuous singing in a variety of Manding languages. Performing here with a band of seasoned Afrobeat players, Jobarteh previews her long-awaited follow-up, due in early 2019. “All the makings of an international star” (Guardian)
