World Pipe Band Championships return to Glasgow Green

Thousands of musicians and spectators from around the world will descend on Glasgow Green for the World Pipe Band Championships this weekend (Friday 12 August and Saturday 13 August).

The Worlds are a celebration of Scottish culture and the highlight of the piping calendar. The event sees the best pipers and drummers battle it out to determine the best of the best.

This year there will be 146 bands from ten nations in what is sure to be an unforgettable occasion. The nations represented include Argentina, Austria, Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, Israel, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and the USA.

Ticket holders for the weekend will be able to take in all the action, from qualifiers to Drum Major Competitions to the crowning of the Grade 1 champions. The competition will end with a spectacular march-past of all pipe bands in the main arena. 

There will also be an opportunity to sample some outstanding food and drink while the Traders Village will also offer souvenirs as a reminder of this special event.

Glasgow Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren, and Chieftain of this year’s championships, said: “The Worlds are guaranteed to be a memorable occasion, and I am delighted they have returned to Glasgow. The event is a chance to see the best pipers and drummers performing at the very top of their game. Glasgow Green will be awash with tartan, the sound of pipes and people from around the world in what is a truly Scottish spectacle. It is one not to be missed.”

Kevin Reilly, Chairman of The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, said: “The return of the Worlds has been highly anticipated and is sure to be hotly contested. Pipers and drummers have been rehearsing hard for months and will want to leave their mark on the event. There will be a series of thrilling competitions along with world-class performances. The stakes could not be higher, with thousands of spectators turning up to see how it all unfolds.”

Glasgow first hosted the World Pipe Band Championships in 1948 and has been the host city for the event every year since 1986. Inveraray and District Pipe Band were the World Champions when the competition was last held in 2019.
