Artist Update (Monday 20th March 2023)

Sadly conductor Anu Tali cannot join us this Thursday at City Halls but we are delighted that Taavi Oramo has stepped in at short notice to conduct the programme as originally billed.

Sibelius: Symphony No.2

Arvo Pärt: Fratres

Abel Selaocoe: Four Spirits (World Premiere)

Sibelius’ Symphony No.2

Arvo Pärt  Fratres

Abel Selaocoe  New Work (BBC Co-Commission, World Premiere)

Sibelius  Symphony No. 2

Abel Selaocoe cello

Taavi Oramo conductor

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

From the gentle melody that opens Sibelius’s Second, to its magnificent, surging finale you can see why the composer once compared it to a river gathering speed and strength as it courses to the sea. But it was also interpreted as a rallying call for Finland’s independence from Tsarist Russia.

Anu Tali is the perfect conductor to bring it to vivid life, and she also brings a classic masterwork from her native Estonia: Arvo Pärt's 'Fratres'. There’s a World Premiere, too, from the exuberant cellist, Abel Selaocoe, who returns to the BBC SSO, and fuses Western and African traditions into something universal and completely unique.

**Please note that Tormis's Overture No.2, which was previously billed, has been dropped from this concert.

The concerts ends at approximately 9:20pm.
