The Glasgow Philharmonic Male Voice Choir

Established in Partick, Glasgow in 1925, the choir has a reputation of being one of Britain’s premier male choirs. The choir have regularly performed at venues and festivals around Britain including The Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall in London and our own Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and City Halls. The choir are also past winners of choral competitions including the prestigious Welsh Eisteddfod. This will be a special concert as after 22 years as Musical Director, William Barr is retiring. The choir is delighted to be back performing in the new auditorium of Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, with guests the Scottish Artistes the talented mezzo soprano Cheryl Forbes and the Scottish folk duo The Wherries.

Scottish born Cheryl Forbes has performed regularly with Scottish opera and is currently singing with Doyly Carte Opera Company version of “The Gondoliers” and we are delighted she can come to Scotland for this special concert. Born in Falkirk, Cheryl has appeared in many venues including the Barbican, St. Paul’s Cathedral, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Royal Albert Hall, Glyndebourne and London Palladium, with many leading orchestras including the LSO, BBCCO and BBCSSO.  In 1992 she received the Scroll of Honour from Falkirk Council for services to music.

Cheryl has performed with the choir before most notably as special guest at the massed male voice choir event in the GRCH, Voices of the Commonwealth under the baton of William Barr raising over £40,000 for Alzheimer Scotland.

The Wherries play traditional Scottish folk music in an informal and off-beat style that appeals to audiences of all ages, and have performed regularly throughout Scotland, mainland Europe and the USA. Their unique blend of popular Scottish and Irish 'sing along' traditional Celtic folk music, Clydeside humour and abundant audience participation has won them friends and fans wherever they have performed. From venues as diverse as The Usher Hall in Edinburgh to a Scout hut in Kemnay, and from Singapore to Texas, the warmth and intimacy of a 'Wherries' concert will raise your spirits to a new level and leave you with fond memories for years to come

Adding these soloists to the choir's varied and extensive repertoire promises to make the concert a fitting Swan song for William Barr as Musical Director that will lift your spirits with established Male choral works, audience participation and   songs that will send you home singing.   For more details check out their website, glasphilmvc.org.uk
